Two European companies are competing for winning the supply rights of the official ball of the Egyptian Premier League for the current season 2019/20, for the first time in Egyptian football history.

Earlier negotiations started between the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) and the German giant Puma since they already sponsor the national football team’s clothing. However, the departure of the EFA’s previous board halted the talks.

Mohamed Samir Zaher, head of the marketing department at the EFA, told Daily News Egypt that they have received two offers to sponsor the local football league and provide an official unified ball. The first offer was from Novavera Sport, which is licenced in Austria and prepares to produce FIFA-certified balls. The second offer came from Goal for Sports Marketing which has the commercial agency of  SPORTA in Egypt.

Zaher said that negotiations are still underway with the two companies. After reaching an agreement, the EFA is planning to provide 50 official balls to each club in the Premier League, with the possibility of distributing more balls to the Tier 1 clubs.

Mahmoud Al-Assyouti, chairperson of Novavera, said he is finalising the procedures of opening the company’s first football factory in the region. He puts the sponsorship of the Egyptian Premier League among his top priorities. The factory is set to open in October. It will have a production capacity of 1m balls in the first year.

Al-Assyouti added that he discussed with the Minister of Youth and Sports, Ashraf Sobhy, last month providing balls to youth centres and institutions affiliated to the ministry.

On the other hand, Mohamed Hemida, CEO of Goal, said that the company’s offer to sponsor the local league was not formal and did not get into specifics. He is, however, expected to hold several meetings with the EFA’s marketing department to present an official offer.

He added that his company plans to provide a European-made ball for the Egyptian league, but it will be revealed once an agreement is reached with the EFA.

Alyan Company, the agent of Wilson Sporting Goods and Technifibre in Egypt, currently holds the sponsorship rights of the unified balls of several local leagues in Egypt, including basketball, tennis, squash, golf, and American football, and is now negotiating to add handball to the list.

Daily News Egypt interviewed Karim Alyan, CEO of the company, to learn about their activities and future plans.

Can you elaborate on the company’s start in Egypt?

The company has been working in commercial agency for 25 years, starting with Technifibre, which produces squash equipment, then a significant development happened to the company. We had a contract with the Egyptian Tennis Federation to make Wilson Ball the official ball of the Federation in 2015. This was a significant shift in the company’s sales.

How many outlets does the company have?

The company has opened six commercial centres so far, all dedicated to our products, of which two centres are in Alexandria and four in Cairo. It deals with about 92 distributors covering all the country.

How much is your business in the tennis equipment industry?

The company entered several tenders for tennis equipment, and won the supply rights of tennis and squash equipment for major clubs, such as Al Ahly, Zamalek, El Gezeira, and Heliopolis. The prices of tennis rackets vary according to the level of players; a beginner can buy a racket for EGP 500, while more advanced players can get the racket for EGP 1,000-2,000, and a professional tennis player buy it for EGP 5,000. The average price of a tennis ball is EGP 27. Our annual sales reach 25,000 pieces, 90% of which are balls.

As for tennis shoes, they are priced between EGP 1,900 -3,000, with 15,000 shoes sold annually, while 30,000 pieces of clothing are sold per year.

What about your contract with the Egyptian Tennis Federation?

Our sponsorship contract with the Egyptian Tennis Federation stipulates the provision of EGP 300,000 worth balls. This value also applies to the Squash and Basketball federations. We offer them a discount of up to 50% in clothing, with full sponsorship for the top five players. For players ranking from fifth to tenth, the company offers a 70% discount on its products. Over the past few days, we have offered players and coaches all products with a 50% discount, and achieved outstanding sales. The company plans to repeat this on a quarterly basis. Currently, our contract with the Tennis Federation has been suspended since the current board assumed the responsibility, but we still work with players and clubs.

What about the golf?

As for golf, our work started in August 2018. There are 12 golf clubs in Egypt, and Wilson controls 70% of them. We offer the Egyptian Golf Federation and clubs a discount of up to 40%. It is a very expensive game and most of the players in Egypt are foreigners. In Egyptian tournaments, there is only a 1% participation rate. Sponsors are few and there are no programmes for youngsters, which is a major problem. We have achieved outstanding sales thanks to our discounts, each golfer has a bag of 14 rackets, the prices of each ranges between EGP 12,000-40,000, and the ball pack that consists of three balls costs EGP 100.

Can you elaborate on your agreement with the Egyptian Basketball Federation?

The company negotiated with the Vice President of the Egyptian Basketball Federation, Mohamed Abdel Mottaleb, and made an offer that includes the provision of 350 balls for the federation for EGP 400,000.

What about the company’s activities in the American football?

Wilson provides the official football of Egypt’s American football league, and the game comprises of six clubs. We’ve been working in this sport for three years. WE offer up to 50% discount for the players and clubs.

How does the company support squash in Egypt?

Egypt has international excellence in squash and is among the top ten ranked countries worldwide. There are four major squash players in Egypt who wear clothes and use rackets made by Technifibre, and we have its agency in Egypt. The price of a squash racket ranges between EGP 900-2,500, while its sports clothes cost EGP 800 per piece, and shoes cost EGP 1,700 per piece.

Do you have other products?

We provide all the needs of athletes, so the company also sells fitness equipment.

Have are the company’s other activities?

The company has two tennis academies. One in Katameya Gardens and another in Fifth Settlement, both bear the name Wilson. They aim to prepare young champions. The budget of each academy reaches about EGP 500,000 annually. There is an entity named the Egyptian Tennis Association that organises minor tournaments. The company provides 60% of the value of their prizes and balls. We also participated in sponsoring the Arab Basketball Championship.

Do you have any commercial agencies for football equipment?

We have the commercial agency of Edwards Sports which provides nets for all games, and it is a large brand that is accredited worldwide.

What are your future plans?

The company has made an offer to the Egyptian Handball Federation to be the official sponsor of the game and provide the official ball for local competitions. The negotiations are in progress and both sides are optimistic about reaching an agreement soon.

What are the best-selling products at your stores?

Tennis equipment are the best-selling. The company’s sales this year reached EGP 25m.

What about the company’s investments and labour?

The company’s investments are EGP 35m. We have 250 employees distributed between the company’s headquarters, commercial centers, and academies.

What the problems that you face in the market?

The Minister of Industry’s recent decision to protect locally made products caused us some troubles. We have been trying for a year and a half to register our trademark to obtain a licence to import our products. The delay in getting this licence costs us 100% fines and customs. We are waiting the authorisation from the General Authority of Exports and Imports, but the producers are taking too long.

Do you have e-marketing plans?

The company is moving strongly towards e-marketing. We cooperate with Jumia, Souq.com, and soon with Noon.com.

Have you thought about setting up a factory in Egypt?

Six months ago, we have tried to open a factory to produce tennis balls here since we’re targeting the MENA region, but it turned out to be too expensive. The factory was going to cost about EGP 23m. We were surprised by the high price of the land and the difficulty of procedures, and the fact that the overall cost would amount to EGP 80m, so we cancelled the project.

Minister of Youth and Sports, Ashraf Sobhy, said Egypt aims to achieve three to five medals at the 2020 Summer Olympics to be held in Tokyo.

Sobhy told Daily News Egypt that Egypt has chosen 28 athletes who can compete for Olympic medals, so that the ministry can focus its support and efforts to achieve this goal.

The Minister of Youth and Sports noted that the Egyptian players who will qualify for the Olympics will certainly be more than those that the Egyptian Olympic Committee and the ministry believe can compete for medals.

Sobhy pointed out that selected players are sponsored by the ministry and private companies to receive high-level training in preparation for the global event.

On a different note, Sobhy said he is following up the crisis of the Egyptian Weightlifting Federation, as Egyptian weightlifting players, administrators, and coaches were banned from participating in all activities of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) for two years, while the Egyptian federation was also fined $200,000. The ban relates to seven Egyptian players who failed doping tests during the 2016 Youth African Championships, which was held in Cairo.

The ministry is working on a solution to this problem in parallel with its preparations for the Olympics, as several Egyptian weightlifters are nominated for medals in Tokyo 2020.

On the other hand, Sobhy said he was impressed by the outstanding results achieved by Egyptian players in various games recently, on the continental and international levels, stressing that this generation of athletes enjoys unprecedented support of the state.

Christian Coleman stormed to win the men’s 100m victory, changing his London World Championships silver into gold in Doha on Saturday while Chinese hammer thrower Wang Zheng took her country’s first medal here.

Coleman clocked a world leading time of 9.76 seconds in the blue ribbon event as his American compatriot and defending champion Justin Gatlin took silver in 9.89. Andre De Grasse of Canada was third in 9.90.

“I’ve been blessed with incredible talent and tonight I was able to show it. I have been working incredibly hard and this just makes it all worthwhile,” he said.

Coleman paid tribute to his teammate Gatlin, 37, who first won the world championships in 2005 and his Olympic title in 2004.

“Justin Gatlin is a great guy and great competitor. I remember watching him back in 2004 when I was eight years old and to think all these years later I could come and win gold too is a great feeling,” he said.

Gatlin praised Coleman and said he would again challenge him in Tokyo.

“Christian has had a spectacular season and I knew he’d be tough to beat. He ran a great race. But I have a message for next year – I’m coming. He’d better be ready,” he said.

The United States set the 4X400 meters mixed relay world record in the heat round in 3:12.42, beating the previous best time of 3:13.20 set three years ago in an American local event in Eugene. The mixed relay was included for the first time into the World Championships.

“It was fun. The first time I saw it on TV, it looked funny. You feel much closer to your teammates and we are working together,” said fourth leg runner Obi Igbokwe of the United States.

Wang Zheng bagged a bronze with 74.76 meters in women’s hammer throw, the first medal for the Chinese team in Doha as American DeAnna Price threw 77.54m to take the title.

“Today I just wanted to perform well, I did not expect to win a medal. I guess my shape must be good because I hit the net three times!” said Wang, silver medalist at London world championships two years ago.

Tajay Gayle created history by taking Jamaica’s first men’s long jump gold medal at the world championships as he stunned the field to win in 8.69m, improving his personal best by 37 centimeters. The 23-year-old already had a show of form in his first attempt of 8.46, a result which was enough to secure his victory.

Olympic champion Jeff Henderson of the United States bagged a silver in 8.39 and Cuba’s Juan Miguel Echevarria was third in 8.34.

“I just focus on one thing. I did not let anything to disturb or distract me,” Gayle said.

Sifan Hassan, 5,000m bronze medalist at London worlds, overtook Ethiopia’s Letesenbet Gidey in the final lap to win the 10,000m title in a world leading time of 30:17.62. Gidey came second in 30:21.23 while Kenya’s Agnes Jebet Tirop was third 7.58 seconds off the pace. ■

Mahmoud El-Khatib, chairperson of Al Ahly, agreed in principal to an airline’s offer to establish a new stadium for the Red Devils under usufruct system. The club’s board of directors will hold a meeting soon to discuss the offer.

According to the report made by Mohamed Serag, a board member of the club, the airline’s offer includes bearing construction costs on the condition that the company holds the right to use the stadium and put the company’s brand name on the building for 15 years.

El-Khatib’s approval does not mean that the project is under implementation, but it still requires obtaining necessary licences and security approvals, while the marketing department in the club is preparing economic and geographical studies on the stadium scheduled to be built in Sheikh Zayed city.

El-Khatib stressed the need to finalise all these arrangements as soon as possible, especially since this project has been a dream for Al Ahly’s fans over the past years. A dream that has been delayed for years due to high costs, which exceeds EGP 2bn.

For El-Khatib, the stadium project is of strategic importance, especially after recent failures by both the club and its football team. He hopes to start the construction of the stadium before the end of his current term.

Meanwhile, the football team, on Thursday, continues its training in preparation for meeting Cano Sport, on Saturday, in the second leg of the round of 32 of the CAF Champions League.

The team resumed their training on Wednesday after a short rest following their victory over Smouha (1-0) on Monday in the first round of the Egyptian Premier League.

Al Ahly’s Swiss coach René Weiler, held a session with the players before the training, during which he stressed the need to focus on winning the upcoming match. He explained that inning the first leg does not mean that their qualification was guaranteed.

Investigation underway into EFA’s failure to vote for Mohamed Salah in FIFA’s Best awards https://wwww.dailynewssegypt.com/2019/09/27/investigation-underway-into-efas-failure-to-vote-for-mohamed-salah-in-fifas-best-awards/ Fri, 27 Sep 2019 08:00:59 +0000 https://ww.dailynewssegypt.com/?p=709280 El-Badry seeks to contain Liverpool star’s anger, Magdy Abdel Ghany denies responsibility

The post Investigation underway into EFA’s failure to vote for Mohamed Salah in FIFA’s Best awards appeared first on Daily News Egypt.

]]>
The former board of directors of the Egyptian Football Association (EFA), chaired by Hany Abu Reda, has apparently implicated the acting five-member board of the EFA after the ex-board failed to vote for Liverpool star Mohamed Salah in FIFA’s Best awards.

The Liverpool star, who finished fourth in the Men’s Best Player award, raised alarms of a possible withdrawal from Egypt’s national team after removing all references on his social media accounts.

However, Salah appeared to reassure fans that this would not happen with a post on social media. The 27-year-old tweeted: “No matter how they try to change my love for you and your people they will not.”

A major investigation is now underway by the EFA acting board as the team’s captain Ahmed Elmohamady and Olympic team coach Shawky Ghareeb revealed they voted for Salah, but they were not registered towards the count.

Barcelona’s Lionel Messi won the FIFA’s Best award, beating Dutch Virgil van Dijk who came second and Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo in third place. Egypt’s vote would have placed Salah in second.

Head of the EFA’s acting board, Amr El-Ganainy, decided to open an investigation into the issue, especially after Ehab Lehita, the national team’s former manager, confirmed that both the Olympic team coach and El-Mohamady voted for Salah and handed over their ballots in mid-August, four days before closing the vote.

Salah expressed his anger at the actions of the EFA, especially in light of the previous row between the two parties, starting back under Abu Reda’s term. Salah feels that this mismanagement was deliberate, and has threatened to not attend the national team’s training camp in October.

The only vote that had been registered from Egypt was by journalist Hany Danial, who voted Senegalese Sadio Mane and Cristiano Ronaldo ahead of Salah.

Meanwhile, Magdy Abdel Ghany, head of the Egyptian Professional Footballers Association and former board member of the EFA, said he was not responsible for Salah losing votes.

He added that the EFA is the only body responsible for collecting and delivering the votes.

Abdel Ghany referred to the votes of Egyptian players that put Salah in the 50-man long list for the award, denying accusations of deliberate mismanagement.

On the other hand, Hossam El-Badry, the newly appointed coach of Egypt’s national team, pledged to intervene and persuade the player to back down and participate in the camp, given that he is one of the most important players in the world. El-Badry has announced summoning five Egyptian players to national team duty, including Mohamed Salah, Mohamed Elneny, Ahmed Hegazy, Mahmoud Hassan Trezeguet, and Ahmed Hassan Koka.

On a different note, on Thursday, the EFA will hold a press conference to announce the signing of Hossam El-Badry as the head coach of the national team, replacing Mexican Javier Aguirre. It is expected to announce the full squad of the national team and the coaching staff which will show play the qualifiers for the Africa Cup of Nations 2019 and the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.

According to sources, the coaching staff will include Mohamed Barakat as football director, Ahmed Ayoub and Tarek Mostafa as general coaches, Sayed Moawad as assistant coach, Ayman Taher as goalkeepers coach, Mohamed Abu El-Ella as head of the medical team, Shady Barakat for psychological rehabilitation, and Ali Mohamed Ali and Mina Sameh as administrators.

The Minister of Finance, Mohammed Moeit, said that there is no increase in tax rates in the draft law on income tax, which is currently being drafted, in coordination with the business community.

Moeit stated that the Egyptian Tax Authority has completed  drafting  the first version of the draft law, which is currently being revised in preparation for its introduction to community-based dialogue.

He added that the ministry began to communicate with concerned authorities to send their proposals for the new draft law.

The minister stressed that the new draft law will not include any amendments on tax exemptions.

He elaborated that one of the reasons for drafting a new tax law is to remove the current ambiguity of some articles concerning the income tax law, which are problematic for many investors, adding “We also target a tax incentive system for investments, taking into account that taxes contribute 75% of state revenues.”

The simplification of procedures, standardisation and the application of the automation system will lead to little contribution of the human factor in tax estimates, according to Moeit.

Furthermore, Moeit said that the ministry of finance issued orders to two international companies to automate the Egyptian Tax Authority, which may take a year.

Additionally, the minister said that the draft law of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which was sent to the parliament for discussion, includes tax deductions for projects up to 80%, in addition to imposing a flat tax on entrepreneurs as a kind of facilitation.

He further added that over the next two fiscal years (FYs), the government aims to extend the average government debt to five years from the current four years.

The finance ministry plans to reduce public debt by 2022 to reach 77.5% against the 83% target by the end of the current FY, Moeit said.

The ministry’s plan during the next two FYs aims to reduce Egypt’s public deficit in the budget to 4.7%, in line with international standards,” he pointed out, adding, “By 2030, Egypt will be among the 10 economic tigers, due to its rapid economic growth.”

Moeit pointed out that the government has overcome some crucial issues related to economic development and boosting investments.

Transferring profits abroad previously faced many problems which might have affected foreign direct investments (FDIs), but, currently, the process became very easy and flexible which is clear in the increase of FDIs in Egypt’s local market, he explained.

Moreover, the minister disclosed that the export subsidy reached EGP 6bn instead of EGP 4bn to boost exports and decrease imports.

Milan, home to many world-renowned attractions, will host The Best FIFA Football Awards 2019 on Monday at the Teatro alla Scala.

A pair of world-class icons will host the most prestigious evening of the football season: Italian sports anchor, Ilaria D’Amico, and the Dutch legendary footballer, Ruud Gullit.

The Best FIFA Football Awards is an association football award presented annually by the sport’s governing body, FIFA, since 2016. The first award ceremony was held on 9 January 2017 in Zurich, Switzerland. The award aims to revive the FIFA World Player of the Year, which was merged with France Football’s Ballon d’Or in 2010 to become the FIFA Ballon d’Or in a six-year partnership.

The ceremony involves fans more than ever before, with their votes helping to decide the winners of The Best FIFA Men’s and Women’s player and coach awards, as well as the new FIFA Fan Award which recognises an outstanding celebratory fan moment or gesture. Each player/coach award consists of four voting groups (national coaches, national captains, a select group of media, and the fans). Each group’s votes are counted and converted into a percentage. This percentage is divided by four, ensuring that all voting groups are weighted equally at 25%. The four percentages are then added together to form a total percentage that defines the winner.

The three-man shortlist of The Best FIFA Men’s Player includes the UEFA Champions League winner Virgil van Dijk, two-time award winner Cristiano Ronaldo, and the world’s five times top player Lionel Messi. Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp, Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, and Tottenham Hotspur coach Mauricio Pochettino are the finalists for The Best FIFA Men’s Coach. Meanwhile, the trio Lucy Bronze, Alex Morgan, and Megan Rapinoe are competing for The Best FIFA Women’s Player. For The Best FIFA Women’s Coach, the candidates are Jill Ellis, Phil Neville, and Sarina Wiegman.

The Best FIFA Men’s Goalkeeper shortlist incudes Alisson Becker, Santana de Moraes, Marc-André ter Stegen, while the finalists for the inaugural The Best FIFA Women’s Goalkeeper includes Christiane Endler, Hedvig Lindahl, and Sari van Veenendaal.

Moreover, the stunning goals by Lionel Messi, Juan Fernando Quintero, and Daniel Zsori will be put before a panel of FIFA Legends, who will determine the winner of the 2019 Puskás Award.

Hard work behind reaching top world ranking in squash: Ali Farag https://wwww.dailynewssegypt.com/2019/09/22/hard-work-behind-reaching-top-world-ranking-in-squash-ali-farag/ Sun, 22 Sep 2019 13:01:00 +0000 https://ww.dailynewssegypt.com/?p=708695 Playing professional squash in Egypt is much better than in Europe, says PSA men’s No. 1

The post Hard work behind reaching top world ranking in squash: Ali Farag appeared first on Daily News Egypt.

The Commercial International Bank (CIB) and IEvents have announced in a press conference the details of two of the most important squash tournaments in the world under the sponsorship of O West. They are namely the PSA Women’s World Championship and the PSA Men’s Platinum Championship. The tournaments are scheduled to be held from 24 October 24 to 1 November at the foot of the Giza Pyramids, under the sponsorship of the Ministry of Youth and Sports as well as the Egyptian Tourism Authority.

The championships will see 112 of the world’s best squash players from 20 countries, including 64 in the women’s championship and 48 in the men’s championship.

For the first time in the game’s history, the PSA Women’s World Championship’s prizes amount to a total of $430,000, which is higher than the Men’s World Championship, while the Men’s Platinum awards amount to $185,000.

“The CIB is not just a bank but an integral part of the society. We support squash out of our confidence in the Egyptian champions and we hope to see it becomes an Olympic game,” said Hisham Ezz Al-Arab, chairperson and managing director of the CIB.

“Increasing the value of the Women’s World Championship’s prizes to be higher than the Men’s World Championship demonstrates our support to women and gender equality, and this is one of the most important signs of any civilised society,” he added.

Moreover, Hussein Abaza, CEO and board member of the CIB, said, “Egypt is going through its golden age of squash, where Egyptian champions are occupying top world ranks, for both men and women, and even youth.”

“The CIB has chosen squash as part of the bank’s corporate social responsibility programme, and we hope to see Egypt’s dominance of the game continues for 20 years. Therefore, the bank has set a future plan to create a new generation of young champions, starting by signing cooperation deal with the Darwish Squash Academy. We also launched small tournaments, so that the young players can improve their international rankings,” Abaza added.

“We are honoured to support and sponsor Egypt’s champions whom we consider as ambassadors of Egypt. They have proven that they are not only great at squash but also professional, dedicated, and humble people,” he continued.

Additionally, Chairperson of IEvents, Amr Mansi, expressed his delight of the return of the PSA Women’s World Championship to Egypt, saying “it was a dream we sought to achieve. Squash became popular in Egypt through this championship which introduced a whole new generation of world champions and encouraged others to work harder to become champions themselves.”

“We would like to thank the CIB for its continuous support to squash in Egypt, which has played a significant role in supporting a large number of players. It continues to do that through hosting one of the most highly anticipated squash events in the world,” Mansy added.

The draw of the first round of the PSA Women’s World Championship was attended by football stars Hazem Emam and Mido, actor Ahmed Hatem, and former squash player Karim Darwish. Also, Ali Farag, the current world champion and world number one in squash, has attended the draw event. Daily News Egypt sat down with Farag to learn more about his journey with squash.

How did you become the top squash player in the world?

If anyone wants to succeed and achieve his dreams, he should work hard and put a plan for himself. He also needs to get support from his family, and find those who sponsor him, such as the CIB and Wadi Degla in my case. These were the things that helped me be who I am today.

Could you tell us how you usually spend your day?

I get up at 8:30 am and have breakfast. At 10:00 am, I arrive at the club and start fitness training until 12:00 pm. Then, I practice squash until 2:00 pm. Afterwards, I go home and have lunch then take a nap. At 7:00 pm, I go again to the club to play squash with my colleagues until 8:30 pm. Then, I do healing training, and go home at 9:30 pm. I have my dinner and sleep by 12:00 pm.

Is this your daily routine for the whole week?

This is my daily routine from Saturday to Thursday. Every Thursday, I finish my morning training and take rest in the evening. Fridays are for my family. I practice squash for five hours daily besides my fitness and healing trainings, as they important as important as squash training. Without these exercises, I could get injured and would not be able to withstand the physical pressure on my body.

Can players have a full-time job besides squash?

This would not be suitable for any professional player, and will prevent the player from reaching top rankings. If you want to achieve your dreams in sports, you should be completely free, especially as players could travel for 100-150 days a year for tournaments, so how can they work?

Is squash a profitable game?

In certain cases, yes, especially if the player is sponsored by entities like the CIB and Wadi Degla club. The CIB provides players with professional trainers and bottom-up sponsorship. It starts with young players since entering academy, sponsors international trips, and organises tournaments with good prizes. And when the player is fully professional, it offers full financial support, giving players a higher income.

What does the fact that your wife is also a squash player affect you?

The presence of Nour in my life adds a lot to me. My sports life is difficult and it is not easy for anyone to understand it. It has a different routine, sometimes you return home and you are very exhausted and not at your best mood, these things cannot be understood by anyone unless they experience it. She also motivates me all the time. She is an inspiration to my career. She works hard, knows how to overcome difficult situations, and even consults me being in the same field. I consider her my own adviser as she knows me very well. We are both so lucky.

Have you received any offers to play abroad?

I played for many clubs in Europe, such as York in England and Paderborn in Germany, but playing in Egypt is better financially. Platers are paid per match abroad, but in Egypt you get an annual contract. Moreover, living in Egypt is cheaper. In Europe, you will bear expenses of housing and other things of daily life, as well as taxes. Moreover, the highest level of squash in the world is in Egypt now, not to mention that my family is the most important thing in my life and leaving my family seems impossible.

How it feels to play in front of Giza Pyramids?

It’s an indescribable feeling. “Pyramids Squash Championship” was the reason for my love of the game. Watching Ahmed Barada and Karim Dawrish playing squash made me wish I could be like them. I hope we can offer high performance and win the title, in both men and women championships.

What is your advice for young players?

I hope they can be better than me. I definitely want everyone to have his own character and playing style. The priority for them should be completing their study, then playing sports. They should surround themselves with those who can bring positivity to their lives, such as family and good coaches, as they can push them forward in difficult situations.

Finally, what are your future plans?

I will play the US Open Championship within two weeks, then there is the Pyramids Championship, then the World Championship. I have many tournaments to play until June 2020. I strive to maintain the top world ranking. I hope my generation can inspire young players the same way Ahmed Barada and Karim Darwish inspired us, and I hope that Egyptians continue their lead of the world squash.

Napoli’s goals were scored by Dries Mertens from a penalty at minute 82 and Fernando Llorente at minute 90 in the game. The Reds became the first Champions League holders to lose in its opening game in the following season, since AC Milan lost to Ajax back in 1994.

Liverpool has not managed to win any game as a visiting team in the Champions League since defeating Slovenian NK Maribor (7-0) on 17 October 2017.

Last season, Liverpool won the Champions League after beating Tottenham Hotspur 2-0. The Reds top the Premier League table this season so far with 15 points, winning their first five matches.

The total value of the PSA Women’s World Championship’s prizes reached $430,000, exceeding the men’s championship prizes for the first time. The tournament will witness the participation of 64 players representing 25 countries, including Egypt; England; the Netherlands; France; Malaysia; India; Pakistan; Sweden; New Zealand; Finland; Mexico; Canada; Colombia; Germany; Spain; China; the United States; South Africa; Australia; Latvia; the Philippines; Wales; Peru; Scotland, and Belgium.

Meanwhile, the total value of the PSA Men’s Platinum’s prizes amounted to $185,000, to be one of the largest eight platinum tournaments in the world. A total of 48 players from 25 countries will join the event.

The CIB has been sponsoring the Egyptian Squash Association (ESA) for seven years. The bank supports ten players, including Raneem El Welily; Nour El Tayeb; Nouran Gohar; Salma Hany; Hania Al Hamami; Ali Farag; Tarek Momen; Karim Abdel Gawad; Mohamed Abu Al-Ghar, and Marwan El Shorbagy.

Chairperson of IEvents, Amr Mansi, said the cooperation between his company and the ESA dates back to 2010, noting that IEvents has partaken in establishing and organising major tournaments in Egypt.

CIB Chief Executive and board member, Hussein Abaza, said: “We are thrilled to be sponsoring an event of this magnitude and importance, which bookends a significant track record the CIB has built throughout the years to bring squash to the forefront. This partnership with the PSA will not only propel engagement with the sport in the local arena but underscores our commitment to the exceptionally talented players who deserve a dedicated, engaged partner that wholeheartedly believes in their success.”

In addition to their sponsorship of the 2019-2020 PSA Women’s World Championship, the CIB have also committed to becoming title sponsors of future tournaments in Egypt in both 2020 and 2021.

Assem Khalifa, head of the ESA, said he was happy with the return of the tournament to Egypt, stressing that it will be a great championship. The tournament’s draw was attended by football stars Hazem Emam and Mido, actor Ahmed Hatem, and former squash player Karim Darwish.

Egyptian squash occupies a significant position in the world, where the top 10 rankings in September included five Egyptian players, namely Ali Farag (1st); Mohamed Shorbagy (2nd); Tarek Moamen (3rd); Karim Abdel Gawad (4th), and Mohamed Abu Al-Ghar (7th).

For women, the list of top 10 players in the world includes four Egyptians, namely Raneem El Welily (1st); Nour El Sherbini (2nd); Nouran Gohar (4th), and Nour El Tayeb (5th).

Khalifa told Daily News Egypt earlier, that the ESA has nothing to do with the private sponsorship contracts between players and companies, but it is involved in the contracts between players and their clubs. The ESA has a limited role when it comes to top-rank players, but it focuses on juniors.

Cairo giants Zamalek will face Pyramids on Sunday night in the final of Egypt Cup at the Borg El Arab Stadium in Alexandria, in the presence of nearly 20,000 spectators.

Zamalek is the holders of the last edition of Egypt Cup when he defeated Smouha and added the 26th title to its history. The White Night hopes to win this final to make it up to its fans, having lost the league’s title to its rival Al Ahly.

Zamalek has qualified at the expense of Al Ittihad Alexandria Club in the semi-finals, and they have great motivation to achieve the 27th title. Moreover, Zamalek’s President Mortada Mansour promised big financial rewards for the players if they won the precious trophy.

Zamalek’s history weighs heavy on Pyramids. Both teams met in six games, of which four matches when Pyramids was previously named Al Assiouty, all of which ended with Zamalek winning. The other two games ended in a 3-3 draw and 1-0 win for Pyramids. All these matches were in the local league, so today’s game is the first between the two teams in Egypt Cup.

Zamalek’s coach Serbian Milutin Sredojević motivated his players well, demanding them to play with high spirit and win the title to delight their fans.

The head coach identified Pyramids’ strengths, outlining its key weaknesses, and was keen to hold a video lecture for the players to better explain the opponent.

The White Knight enters today’s clash with a strong squad, likely to include Mohamed Awaad as goalkeeper, Mahmoud Alaa, Mohamed Abdel Ghani, Hamdy El-Nagguez, Abdallah Gomaa, Ferjani Sassi, Tarek Hamed, Youssef Ibrahim, Mohamed Ounajem, Achraf Bencharki, and Mostafa Mohamed.

For Pyramids, the newly branded team enter the final with high spirit as well, with its management promising big rewards for winning Egypt Cup, which will be the first title for the club in its history, making a great achievement for the club. Pyramids presented a great performance in the Egyptian Premier League this season and finished third, and qualified to the CAF Confederation Cup for the first time.

Pyramids’ coach veteran French Sébastien Desabre relies on young stars in today’s clash, which will also be his first as a coach with Pyramids after being appointed recently. Pyramids’ squad includes Ahmed El Shenawy as goalkeeper, Ali Gabr, Ragab Bakar, Eric Traoré, Donga, Omar Gaber, Eslam Eissa, Jhon Cifuente, Ibrahim Hassan, and Abdallah El Said.

Seven football clubs in the Egyptian Premier League appointed foreign coaches to lead their teams in the football season 2019/20, which has yet to start. Serbia has the lion’s share with three coaches in the new season, while four clubs selected coaches from Switzerland, Greece, France, and Brazil.

Most recently, Al Ahly has announced reaching agreement with Swiss René Weiler for a €2.2m one-year contract, along with four foreign assistants. The contract included a three-month penalty clause on both sides, which would be null and void if the coach failed to win both the Premier League and the CAF Champions League.

For its rival Zamalek, the White Knight contracted the Serbian coach Milutin Sredojević, simply known as Micho, for one season with a salary of $70,000 per month and $30,000 for his three aides. The contract includes a penalty clause of two months’ salary if terminated.

Meanwhile, Pyramids selected Sébastien Desabre to lead the team for two seasons, with three foreign assistants. The financial value of the contract has not been disclosed.

In the new season, Tala’ea El Gaish SC will be coached by the Brazilian Sérgio Farias. The coach is best known for winning the AFC Champions League with Pohang Steelers of Korea, and qualified for the Club World Cup in 2009 and finished third. He also won the Campeonato Sul Americano (U-17) in 2000 with Brazil.

El Gouna this season, like Zamalek and Ismaily, preferred the Serbian coaching school. The club signed Nebojša Milošević and his assistant Vladan Perašević, while Wadi Degla decided to keep his Greek coach Takis Gonias for a second year after the team performed well in the last season.

Egyptian weightlifter Khedr El-Tony is so well-known for the people living in Cairo, Alexandria, and Helwan. The great athlete made an impressive achievement at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin. He won two gold medals, leaving the German leader Adolf Hitler fascinated. The strongest man in the world, at the time, defeated German champions and broke world records that have stood over half a century in the weightlifting.

Over its history in Olympic Games, Egypt won 31 medals only, of which 14 medals achieved in weightlifting. Interestingly, Egypt has only seven gold Olympic medals since the start of the Olympic Games in Stockholm in 1912, of which five medals went to weightlifters. It shows that the Egyptian weightlifters’ sweeping dominance in the 12th African Games held last month in Rabat was not a surprise.

In Rabat, Egypt won 273 medals, including 56 medals in weightlifting alone. This also includes 31 gold out of 102 golds achieved by Egypt, in a clear confirmation of the excellence of the Egyptian weightlifters.

The weightlifting gold medals were won by 11 athletes, of whom nine players won three medals each, namely Mohamed Ehab; Sarah Samir, who previously won a bronze medal in the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro; Ahmed Saad; Karim Abu Kahla; Abdel Rahman Mohamed; Ragab Abdel Hay; Rania Ezzat; Mohamed Abdel Alim; and Halima Abdel Azim, while Samar Habashy and Gaber Farhan won two golds each.

In addition, nine Egyptian weightlifters won 20 silver medals, of whom three players won three silvers each, namely Basma Emad, Mostafa Ibrahim, and Shaima Khalaf. Besides, Amed El Sayed, Salma Farag, Heba Ahmed, and Israa Ahmed won two medals each, while Neama Saeed, Gaber Farhan, and Samar Habashy won one silver each.

The weightlifting success also includes five bronze medals, by Neama Saeed (two medals) and one medal by each of Israa Ahmed, Salma Farag, and Mohamed Sayed.

Mohamed Mahgoub, head of the Egyptian Weightlifting Federation, told Daily News Egypt, “Good preparations, discovering young talents, and the support of sponsors as well as the Ministry of Youth and Sports for players have all stood behind this great achievement.”

“So far, we have received EGP 4m from the Ministry of Youth and Sports to make the players ready for the Tokyo Olympics, and this has played an important role in preparing 20 players,” he added.

He continued, “Our ambitions in the 2020 Olympics have increased thanks to good preparation and increased spending, In Rio de Janeiro, we got two bronze medals where nine players participated. In Tokyo, the qualification system has changed and we cannot have more than four players. We hope to improve our results and win more medals.”

“The tournaments qualifying for Tokyo Olympics will end in April 2020. We are currently preparing for the World Championships in Thailand (18-27 September), with another tournament left.”

“At the African Games, there were players who excelled and I was very pleased with their performance, such as Karim Kahla, who achieved new records, as well as Rania Ezzat, Halima Abdel Azim, and Samar Habashy,” Mahgoub said.

He concluded, “Winning a medal is no longer a stroke of luck. We must prepare well to compete with other countries. I hope the great achievements in African Games can grab the attention of sponsors to support individual sports.”

Moreover, Mohamed Adel Hosny, chairperson of the Royal Sports Investment Company which sponsors the Egyptian Weightlifting Federation, said he was delighted with the Egyptian achievements in the African Games in Rabat.

Hosny told Daily News Egypt, “We are proud of the great achievements by the Egyptian weightlifters in the African Games. They won 56 medals, 31 gold, 20 silver, and 5 bronze.”

He added, “We aim to repeat these achievements in the Tokyo Olympics. We have great confidence in our players in weightlifting and the modern pentathlon to win Olympic medals, which was our main motivation to sponsor the two federations.”

Mohamed Gad, CEO and managing director of the company, said, ‘Weightlifting’s winning of one-third of Egypt’s gold medals in Rabat underlines the important role played by our company in the development of individual games, with the support of the state institutions.”

Gad called on private companies to support and sponsor individual sports as they made great achievements on the continental and global levels.

He stressed that the company will continue to support the weightlifting and modern pentathlon federations in order to continue their success in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Royal Sports Investment has a capital of EGP 500,000 with investments reaching EGP 3.5m, sponsoring the Egyptian weightlifting, modern pentathlon, and taekwondo federations.

Throughout her life, Ma’aab Ahmed could not give up on her dream of riding bicycles. She could not let go of her desire to fly on two wheels, with air flowing through her hair, and filling in her open lungs. Yet, not being able to learn was always a struggle she needed to overcome. Passionate of Kayak, Ahmed could not find a better way to combine between her passion and the lifetime desire, but through Nile Bike.

Water biking is a sport that Ahmed was the first to introduce to people in Egypt, through Nile Bike. Using a bicycle that is placed with wires on two rafts that lift up the whole weigh of the body and the bicycle, Nile bikers get to surf the calm river surface technically biking.

“I never let go of my dream of riding a bicycle. Even at the age of 40, I kept on looking for a way to make my dream come true,” Ahmed told Daily News Egypt.

The moment she saw such a sport taking place in Italy, she immediately knew that this is what she wants to establish in Egypt for those who share her passion.

“I sent the founders in Italy to ask about its details, requirements, and safety measures, and I did not stop before making sure I knew about it all and that I can apply it in Egypt,” she asserted.

Since the start of the sport in Egypt, it was met with huge success among people who believe that “do not want to stop at the water’s edge.”

Nonetheless, Ahmed did not stop at the edge, stating Nile Bike as an enjoyable activity, she worked in order to get the official permits in order to state it as an official sport adopted by the ministry of youth and sports.

Water Pollution is one of the main struggles facing Nile bikers. “Plastic waste is one of the things that differs from one place to another, yet remains a struggle in all places as the Nile is quite polluted,” Ahmed explained.

“Getting the required permits were the most difficult part of it all. Yet, I did not stop before officially inaugurating it as a sport in Egypt,” she added.

Nile Bike is currently seeking to roam Egypt’s various governorates while overviewing the Nile.

Al Ahly SC have ended a long-running controversy over the head coach post after announcing that Swiss Rene Weiler will be in charge of the club’s football team following Martin Lasarte who was sacked in mid-August after losing to Pyramids in Egypt Cup.

The Swiss coach chose three foreign members in his coaching staff, a point that was controversial as Al Ahly wanted to appoint a national general coach, but finally approved the new coach’s requests.

A delegation from Al Ahly’s board of directors, led by Khaled Mortagy and Amir Tawfik, flew to Switzerland two days ago, after negotiations with Italian Luciano Spalletti and Brazilian Mano Menezes stalled.

Weiler was selected after long discussions within the club’s planning committee, including Taha Ismail, Zakaria Nassef, and Khaled Bebo, in coordination with Mahmoud El Khatib, chairperson of the club.

The 44-year-old Swiss manager agreed an annual salary of $2m, despite attempts by Mortagy and Tawfik to reduce it.

The Swiss coach is expected to arrive in Cairo on Sunday to officially start his job with the team.

Al Ahly’s next game will be against Equatorial Guinea champions Kano Sport on 14 September in the round of 32 of the CAF Champions League.

So far, it is not clear whether Weiler will lead Al Ahly in this match or the temporary coaching staff, led by Mohamed Youssef, will continue its work until the new coach gets to know the team.

The current football manager, Sayed Abdel Hafez, will remain in his post, while Samy Komsan will be the assistant manager.

Weiler has coached his fair share of clubs in Europe mainly in Switzerland, Germany, and Belgium including Swiss sides FC Aarau and FC Luzern, as well as German club FC Nuremberg.

However, his most successful stint was with Belgian giants RSC Anderlecht whom he led to their last league title in 2017 as well as the Super Cup.
