Oscars 2020 Red Carpet: Diamond necklaces sparkle more than ever

From Tassele brooches to marquise-cut diamonds, tear-drop gemstones to jewel-encrusted chokers, these are some of our favourite looks from the 92nd Academy Awards.


The Oscars are the biggest display of jewellery on the planet. This year there were lots of classic jewelleries certainly the name of the game at the 2020 Oscars, also it was diamonds that ruled the red carpet as stars sparkled wearing Forevermark, Bulgari, Chopard, Harry Winston, Cartier, Tiffany & Co., Chanel, Gucci, and Louis Vuitton, and jewels from other international brands and acclaimed jewellry designers.

From Tassele brooches to marquise-cut diamonds, tear-drop gemstones to jewel-encrusted chokers, these are some of our favourite looks from the 92nd Academy Awards.

While statement earrings of course featured on many stars, the order of the day at this year’s Oscars was without a doubt classic diamond necklaces from bold diamond chokers, to pieces partnered with one stand-out gemstone, to real timeless and classic designs, many were styled in a cool new way on top of a blouse (Gal Gadot) or under the hooded dress à la Grace Jones (Janelle Monáe).

Many of the stars wore sustainable jewellery pieces. Oscar nominee, Scarlett Johansson, wore $2.5m word of Forvermark diamond pieces, including earrings, which for part of a one-of-a-kind collaboration with designer Anita Ko. Elsewhere, Atelier Swarovski adorned men and women alike, including Olivia Coleman and Antonio Banderas, with bespoke conscious luxury designs, while brand ambassador Penelope Cruz used the event to debut her new emerald cut lab-grown diamond ring created in collaborated with the jewellery house. British lab-grown diamond brand, Lark & Berry, also dressed several stars.

Men continue to up jewellery game

2020 has seen an increase in men adding jewels to their suits, with many wearing a variety of pieces from subtle cufflinks and bracelets, to statement brooches and cufflinks. Mark Ruffalo, wore diamond cufflinks by Harry Winston, while Keanu Reeves wore a Cartier Tradition dress set, 1956, in 14ct yellow gold and platinum with onyx and diamonds. On the brooches front, which was one of the biggest trends of the night for gents, Timothée Chalamet wore a Cartier Tradition brooch, 1955, crafted with rubies and diamonds, Elton John places a bespoke diamond and sapphire rocket brooch by Harry Winston on his purple suit, and Taika Waititi showcased a lingerie pin with diamonds and a grey Tahitian pearl by jewellry designer, Nikos Koulis.

Lark & Berry partnered with Diamond Foundry to create a collection for the night

London-based Lark & Berry partnered with the Leonardo DiCaprio-backed diamond growing company, Diamond Foundry, to create a collection for the Academy Awards. The hero piece was a 64.5ct necklace set with 500 diamonds, which was worn by singer and actor, Billy Porter, during the opening ceremony, whilst the collaboration also included a set of long earrings, stud options of a similar design and a striking collar necklace – all crafted in 18ct white gold. Pieces feature trillion and baguettes stones in delicate sizes, all partnered together to create the ultimate impact.

Charlize Theron

Charlize Theron has sparkled at each awards show and she does it again in this Tiffany & Co. necklace with 165 diamonds including a marquise-cut diamond drop totalling 21ct, and was framed by an additional five carats of diamonds and set in platinum. The necklace is valued at more than $ 5 million. And as if that wasn’t daring enough, she was also decked out in Tiffany & Co. diamond stud earrings (totalling $24,300) and band rings ($33,300).

Regina King

Regina King was the presenter of the Oscars. She wore a number of pieces from Harry Winston, including the Draperie Diamond Bracelet (46.93ct), Carpet Diamond Ring (8.16ct), Sparkling Cluster Diamond Ring (2.34ct), and a Crossover Diamond Ring (2.18ct), all set in platinum.

Mindy Kaling

Actress Mindy Kaling, a presenter, wore several Chopard jewels, including a necklace with 78.46ct of marquise-cut diamonds and 46.33ct of round-shaped diamonds set in 18k white gold; earrings with 4.23ct of pear-shaped diamonds and 0.31ct of diamonds set in 18k white gold, both from the “Haute Joaillerie Collection”; and a ring with a 1.23ct round brilliant-cut diamond and 5.12ct of round-shaped diamonds set in 18k white gold from the “Magical Setting Collection.”

Zazie Beetz

Actress Zazie Beetz  wore a number of Bulgari jewellery, including High Jewellry Divas’ Dream necklace in white gold with three round cut diamonds (3.51ct), round brilliant cut diamonds and pavé set diamonds (74.91ct); a Bulgari High Jewellry necklace in white gold with one oval emerald (5.49ct), 84 buff top emeralds (1.96ct), and pavé-set diamonds (12.01ct); High Jewellry earrings in white gold with one cushion emerald (2,49ct), one round diamond (1,51ct), 24 buff top emeralds (0.92ct), two round diamonds and pavé-set diamonds (0.52ct); a High Jewellry ring in platinum with one emerald cut diamond (5.06ct), and 48 step cut diamonds (3.16ct), and a High Jewellry ring in platinum with one emerald-cut diamond (5.03ct), 18 buff top emeralds, and 34 step-cut diamonds (2.43ct).

Julia Louis-Dreyfus

Julia Louis-Dreyfus, a presenter, wore more than 92ct of Harry Winston diamonds, including a Wave Diamond Necklace, 60.18ct, Round Brilliant Diamond Earstuds (8.43ct), a Crossover Diamond Bangle Bracelet (8.27ct), a Diamond Bird Brooch (3.6ct), Sunflower Diamond Ring (3.89ct), a Diamond Band Ring (2.1ct), a Radiant-Cut Diamond Band Ring (6.3ct), all set in platinum.

Saoirse Ronan

The Little Women best actress nominee also worked with Gucci on a custom head-to-toe look. Her jewels likewise came from the Italian label, including her high-jewellry chandelier earrings crafted of diamonds and spinels, set in 18ct white gold. The whimsical jewel in her hair, meanwhile, was a high-jewellry brooch also by Gucci, crafted of tsavorite and diamonds set in white go.

Greta Gerwig

Director Greta Gerwig wore more than 96ct of emeralds and diamonds jewels from Bulgari including a high Jewellry necklace in platinum with seven emerald beads (56.13ct), 14 pear diamonds (7.18ct), and 32 round diamonds and pavé-set diamonds (18.66ct); High Jewellry earrings in white gold with two cushion diamonds (4.02ct), 32 step cut diamonds (0.99ct), and pavé-set diamonds (0.31ct); and a platinum High Jewellry ring with one cushion-cut diamond (6.51ct), 46 buff-top emeralds (2.08ct) and 16 fancy step-cut diamonds (0.54ct).

Kristen Wiig

With a bright red Valentino gown festooned with side ruffles, the Wonder Woman 1984 co-star chose for an equally modernist take with her jewellry. Wiig’s fringed earrings of 18ct yellow gold are by Nikos Koulis, a jewellry designer based in Athens, Greece (Fred Leighton carries his pieces in the US).

Scarlett Johansson

Scarlett Johansson wore $2.5 million worth of Forevermark diamond jewellry that included Forevermark x Anita Ko Exceptional Pear Diamond Drop Earrings set in 18k white gold (26.65cs), and a Forevermark Diamond Bracelet set in 18k white gold 29.15ct.

Renée Zellweger

With her sleek white Armani Privé one-shoulder column gown, Oscar winner Renée Zellweger chose a single statement piece, the Arch ring by David Webb. It’s crafted of fluted rock crystal, flanked by diamonds and cabochon sapphires, all set in platinum and 18-karat white gold.

Janelle Monae

Singer, songwriter Janelle Monae wore Forevermark Lace of Light Diamond Choker set in 18k white gold (36.54ct), Forevermark by Yerushalmi Diamond Studs with Halo set in 18k white gold (6.36ct), Forevermark Vero Amore Diamond Ring set in 18k white gold (7.04ct), Forevermark Flower Diamond Ring set in 18k white gold (4.31ct), and Forevermark Diamond Eternity Bands set in 18k white gold (6.19ct).

Gal Gadot

Gal Gadot wore a Tiffany Clara diamond necklace. Designed by chief artistic officer Reed Krakoff. The platinum piece features over 125 individual diamonds, totalling 77ct.

Brie Larso,

Brie Larso, a presenter, wore Divas’ Dream High Jewellry earrings in white gold with two pear diamonds (2.02ct), four pear diamonds (2.95ct), 16 fancy diamonds (0.54ct), eight round brilliant diamonds and pavè-set diamonds (3.96ct); Divas’ Dream High Jewellry earrings in white gold and diamonds; and Serpenti bracelet and rings.

Antonio Banderas

Best Actor nominee Antonio Banderas wore a Bulgari Octo Finissimo Automatic watch with titanium case and bracelet and an extra thin mechanical manufacture movement with automatic winding, small seconds and titanium dial.

Geena Davis

Academy Award winner and recipient of the 2020 Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award Geena Davis wore Chopard jewels, including earrings with 6.97ct of fancy-cut diamonds set in 18k white gold, a bracelet with 36.30ct of marquise-cut diamonds and 32.51ct of round-shaped diamonds set in 18k white gold, both from the “Haute Joaillerie Collection;” and a ring with a 3.31ct round brilliant-cut diamond, and 6.47ct of round-shaped diamonds set in 18k white gold from the “Magical Setting Collection.”

Léa Seydoux

French actress Léa Seydoux wore Chopard jewels, including earrings from the “Precious Lace Collection” featuring 12.82ct of pear-shaped diamonds and 0.97ct of diamonds set in 18k white gold; and a ring from the “Haute Joaillerie Collection” featuring a 5.65ct round brilliant-cut diamond and 1.11ct of diamonds set in 18k white gold.

Idina Menzel

Idina Menzel, who will perform “Into the Unknown,” a nominee for Original Song, walked the Oscars red carpet wearing a Harry Winston Cascading Diamond Necklace (60.30ct) Pirouette Diamond Earrings (4.44ct), and a Cluster Diamond Ring (3.92ct), all set in platinum.

Timothée Chalamet

Actor Timothée Chalamet wore a Cartier Tradition brooch, 1955, 18k white gold, platinum, rubies, and diamonds.

Margot Robbie

Margot Robbie accessorised her Chanel black strapless dress with a pearl and lapis brooch with a pearl tassel. She completed her look with a yellow gold, diamond, and pearl Chanel ring.

Salma Hayek

The actress and producer channelled the look of a Greek goddess on Sunday night in a custom white silk-georgette one-shoulder gown by Gucci. Hayek Pinault took the look a step further by reaching out to Boucheron for the jewels to match, including a headpiece of pearls and 18-karat white gold, meant to resemble an olive-branch crown, with earrings, too.

Florence Pugh

Florence Pugh, best supporting actress nominee, wore a diamond wrap choker necklace with a teardrop gemstone from Louis Vuitton’s High Jewellry “Riders of the Knight” collection.
