About 51 injured, 100 shops destroyed in El-Mousky fire

Firefighting continued for 12 hours on Friday

A total of 51 people were injured during a huge fire which broke out in a basement of a four-storey building in Cairo’s El-Mousky area on Friday.

The fire destroyed over 40 shops of perfume and clothing products which led to the huge fire spread.

The Public Prosecution announced on Saturday that the financial causalities of the fire are estimated at EGP 50m and confirmed that there are no serious injuries or deaths.

According to the health ministry’s spokesperson, Khaled Megahed, the injured were all suffering from smoke inhalation. Five were taken to hospital and 10 were treated onsite.

Ministry of health said at the beginning that only 15 people were injured and all suffered from smoke inhalation.

Local media reported that eyewitnesses said that the cause of the fire is an electric cable explosion in the area. Twenty-five fire fighters continued for 12 hours to put out the fire.

In May 2016, a massive blaze had spread throughout the constantly buzzing El-Rewaiei market in Al-Attaba district which is a hub for dozens of street vendors in Egypt, killing three people and injuring 91 others.

The fire eventually destroyed over 100 shops and workshops.
