Death toll among Egyptian pilgrims rises to 39

Last year, 110 Egyptian pilgrims died during the pilgrimage season


Egypt’s Ministry of Health announced on Thursday that the number of deaths among the Egyptian pilgrims in the holy places in Saudi Arabia has reached 39 deaths.

Khaled Mogahed, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Health, said in a statement that the last two dead pilgrims were named Mahmoud Sayed Ahmed Mohamed (63 years) from Alexandria governorate and Jamea Abdul Hameed Ahmed (81 years) from Aswan governorate, who was a member of the pilgrimage lottery.  

The total number of Egyptian pilgrims this year is 78,000, including 36,000 pilgrims travelling through tourism companies, while the rest is divided between lottery pilgrims and pilgrims travelling via Egyptian civil society programmes.

Last year, 110 Egyptian pilgrims died during the pilgrimage season; 105 of them died in Mecca, while the rest were in Medina.
