Thousands of Palestinians at Al-Aqsa after lifting metal detectors

League of Arabs calls for preserving Muslim-Christian holy places in Palestine


Thousands of Palestinians of all ages have re-entered the compound of Al-Aqsa Mosque in occupied East Jerusalem, after a week of tensions following Israeli measures of putting metal detectors on gates at the Muslim-administered Al-Aqsa mosque compound.

The Palestinian Red Crescent said that it has received 225 cases of injuries across the West Bank and Jerusalem after clashes with Israeli security forces.

On Tuesday, the Israeli government announced removing metal detectors from gates that had been placed at the entrance of Al-Aqsa Mosque, following Palestinians’ resistance of the Israeli measures.

Moreover, the Council of the League of Arab States on the level of ministers of foreign affairs called on the Security Council Thursday to maintain peace and security and to implement its resolutions regarding Jerusalem and Al-Aqsa Mosque, including resolutions 476, 478, and 2334, according to an official statement.

The League called on the Security Council to demand that Israel stop its policies and its continual violations against Jerusalem and Al-Aqsa Mosque, which violate rules and international resolutions, according to the statement.

The council in its urgent meeting, which has been presided over by Algerian Foreign Minister Abdel-Kader Mosahel, called on all countries to implement resolutions of the United Nations and the executive council of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) regarding the Palestinian issue, including the committee of international heritage at the UNESCO, which has asserted that Al-Aqsa Mosque and compound is an Islamic site for worshipping and an international heritage site.

The council condemned the Israeli violations, calling on the United States to continue its efforts to restore security and end the tension in basis guarantee the security of the holy places and respecting the legal and historical status quo and the immediate cancellation of the unilateral Israeli measures in Al-Aqsa Mosque, stressing that if the crisis has not been resolved, the situation may worsen.

The meeting asserted the importance of the two-state solution in accordance with the June 1967 borders and the establishment of the Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital. Also, the meeting called on Arab countries to implement their bilateral and international relations to protect occupied Jerusalem and Islamic and Christian holy places including Al-Aqsa Mosque.

Arab foreign ministers asserted the importance of cooperation between the League of Arab
States and the Islamic Cooperation Organisation to preserving Jerusalem and Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, calling on Muslim states and organisations to fund and implement development projects in vital sectors in Jerusalem and increase the amount of money of Al-Aqsa and Jerusalem to $400m.
