Trial of Al-Dostour journalist Mayada Ashraf murder postponed to 28 November

The trial was postponed to continue hearing witness testimonies

South Cairo Criminal Court on Tuesday postponed the trial session for 48 defendants accused of killing Al-Dastour journalist Mayada Ashraf and two others during violent protests in March 2014.

The trial was postponed to 28 November, allowing the court to continue hearing witness testimonies.

The 48 defendants include 36 Muslim Brotherhood members and 12 fugitives, the independent newspaper Al-Youm Al-Sabea reported.

Ashraf, 22, was killed by a gunshot to the head while covering violent clashes between supporters of former president Mohamed Morsi and security forces in the eastern Cairo suburb of Ain Shams.

In the same event, a Coptic woman named Mary Sameh George died when she was assaulted and beaten inside her car.

During that time, the journalist’s murder raised controversy regarding the safety of journalists.

There were claims that Ashraf was shot by security forces and not by protesters; however, the Ministry of Interior denies this claim.
