Police officer injured in armed attack on CIB branch in Cairo

The attacker tried to storm the bank and used a gun to shoot 2 officers, says Interior Ministry

A non-commissioned police officer was injured on Tuesday in an armed attack on a Commercial International Bank (CIB) branch in the Boulaq Aboul Ela district in downtown Cairo, according to a Ministry of Interior statement.

The attack, executed by an anonymous man who attempted to storm the bank, was foiled by two non-commissioned police officers when they returned fire after the attacker shot at them. A shootout ensued and one of the officers was injured.

The ministry’s media office released a statement reading: “Two non-commissioned police officers, Ramadan Ragab and Ahmed Ibrahim, were stationed at the Boulaq Aboul Ela CIB branch. They were surprised by a person attempting to enter the branch. When they tried to arrest him, he shot at them.”

According to the statement, the attacker was carrying a gun and when the two officers startled him, he immediately opened fire. Ragab was injured in the shootout.

Footage from security cameras surrounding the branch is currently being reviewed to discover the attacker’s identity in order to arrest him, the statement clarified.

Earlier in 2015, militant group ‘Popular Resistance in Giza’ released a two-minute video showing masked gunmen setting fire to an Emirates National Bank branch in Haram Street in Giza.

The footage showed around ten masked men gathering in front of the bank. Some of the men fired birdshot rounds at the surveillance camera stationed outside the bank, while others threw Molotov cocktails and flares at the entrance of the bank.

The group’s social media page posted a status vowing to burn more branches of the bank.
