The House of Representatives’ African Affairs Committee will meet with the Assistant Foreign Minister for African Affairs, Mohamed Idris, to discuss ideas on how to deepen Egypt’s relations with Africa.

The meeting will also include representatives for the ministries of water resources and agriculture, committee chairperson Hatem Pashat told Daily News Egypt.

Pashat said that the government officials will discuss their perspectives of relations between Egypt and African countries, and their ideas for strengthening joint affairs. The group will draw up plans to aid in this bilateral development.

The meeting comes as popular fears are growing over the near-completion of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) which has largely impacted Egyptian-Ethiopian relations. Many believe that the GERD will severely decrease the share of the Nile water that Egypt acquires; studies for this matter are still incomplete.

The GERD has strained relations between Ethiopia and Egypt since construction began in 2011, reaching their lowest point in 2013.

The construction started in December 2010 and is projected to end mid-2017.
