Airport authorities stop journalist Wael Abbas upon his return to Cairo

This was his second time to be stopped at the airport, according to the journalist

Cairo International airport authorities stopped well-known journalist and activist Wael Abbas on Saturday upon his return to Egypt from South Korea.

Abbas said that this was not the first time he was stopped when flying back into Egypt. He said authorities had stopped him once before and confiscated his passport.

He was informed that the situation is merely a part of a security investigation.

Abbas is a blogger at Misr Digital and a human rights activist. He has won a number of awards in human rights and journalism.

Daily News Egypt attempted to contact Abbas, but he was not reachable for comment.

Investigations at the airport and travel bans are a frequent tool used by authorities to crackdown on activists and opposition figures. Several local and international human rights NGOs condemned the recent string of travel bans that were issued against a number of political activists and human rights defenders.

On 14 July, security forces at Cairo International airport on Thursday prevented human rights lawyer Nasser Amin from travelling to Beirut, Lebanon, where he was scheduled to participate in a legal conference.
