European Union High Representative Federica Mogherini met Thursday with the parents of murdered Italian student Guilio Regeni. Mogherini conveyed to Mrs. and Mr. Regeni the condolences of the European Union, according to an official statement by the EU. “The murder of Giulio Regeni shocked the European Union,” said Mogherini. “I personally raised the case with the Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry,” The EU, she confirmed, supports all the initiatives the Italian authorities are taking in their search for the truth behind the Regeni’s death. Regeni, 28, was found dead in a ditch along the Cairo-Alexandria Desert Road on 3 February, nine days after his disappearance, amid allegations of possible security involvement due to his research related to Egypt’s labour unions and connections to members of the Egyptian opposition.
