Army kills 3 suspected terrorists near Sheikh Zuweid

The army said a machine gun and a radio set were found with the suspects

Three suspected terrorists were killed in army raid following an exchange of fire near Sinai’s Sheikh Zuweid on Wednesday.

A force of the second field army was setting up a checkpoint when it became suspicious of three men riding motorcycles without plates. According to an army statement, the suspects opened fire on the personnel when the force tried to stop them for inspection, which led to the killing of the three suspects.

The army said a machine gun and a radio set were found with the suspects.

Clashes between the Egyptian Armed Forces and “Sinai Province” are on the rise in North Sinai, while conflicting news reports emerge from both sides regarding the outcome of these incidents.

On Sunday, “Sinai Province”, the Egyptian affiliate of the Islamic State, claimed its militants intercepted a counter-attack by the Egyptian Armed Forces and captured two tanks, killing 15 soldiers in the process.

Army spokesperson Mohamed Samir said military forces in Sinai killed 60 militants and injured another 40 on Friday in clashes in Sheikh Zuweid and Rafah.

A major, deadly attack on 19 March launched a new wave of militant activity in North Sinai as the “Sinai Province” militants attacked El-Safa checkpoint in Al-Arish city, killing 15 police officers.
