Egypt’s El-Shorbagy ranked world’s No.1 in 2016

This was not the first time El-Shorbagy won the Men’s JP Morgan Tournament of Championships by winning against Nick Matthew in 2015 and also in 2016.


Egyptian squash player Mohamed El-Shorbagy, 25, won the title as world’s No.1 in January 2016. He had also won the same title in November 2014.

The year 2016 was a fruitful for 17-time PSA World Tour title’s winner, El-Shorbagy. In the 2016 Men’s JP Morgan Tournament of Champions in New York, he managed to defeat his compatriot Omar Mosaad in the quarter finals. As a result, he secured his place in the semi finals where he managed to win French Mathieu Castagnet, 29, whose current ranking is world’s No.10. El-Shorbagy managed to win these championships’ final against the English world’s No.3 Nick Matthew.

This was not the first time El-Shorbagy won the Men’s JP Morgan Tournament of Championships by winning against Nick Matthew in 2015 and also in 2016.

The 2016 Women’s JP Morgan Tournament of Champions, Egypt was represented by World’s No.2 Raneem El-Weleily, world’s No.10 Nouran Gohar, world’s No.23 Yatherb Adel, World’s No.22 Heba El-Torky, World’s No.5 Nour El Sherbini, World’s No.6 Omneya Abdel Kawy, and World’s No. 87 Mariam Ibrahim Metwally.

Only Gohar and El-Sherbini managed to secure their places in the semi-finals. Thanks to her win over the Malaysian world’s No.3 Nicol Ann David, 32, Nour El-Sherbiny managed to reach the finals were she played against US player Amanda Sobhy, 22, who is world’s No.8, who won.
