Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic, 28, defeated Rafael Nadal 6-1, 6-2 in the 2016 Qatar ExxonMobil Tennis Open finals.
Nadal defeated Illya Vasylovych Marchenko in the semifinals match 6-3, 6-4 on the same day Djokovic defeated Tomáš Berdych 6-3, 7-6.
In the ExxonMobil final, Djokovic faced difficulty in second set. With the score at 6-6, they had to play a decisive game to determine the second set’s winner. Djokovic won the game 6-3, a score that enabled him to win the second set with the result of 7-6.
In addition to the tournament’s final, the two have played against each other’s 47 time. Nadal has won 23 matches and Djokovic won the other 24. The ExxonMobil final was the first time the two met in singles competition.
The last match between the two was last year in the 2015 ATP World Tour Finals celebrated in London. In the semifinals Djokovic defeated Nadal 6-3, 6-3, and Roger Federer defeated his Stan Wawrinka 7-5, 6-3. Djokovic reached the tournament’s final and played against Wawrinka where Djokovic won 6-3, 6-4.
Six years ago, the Czech Bredych defeated Djokovic in the 2010 Wimbledon Championships’ semifinals, a victory that enabled him to reach the final to play against Nadal, where he eventually lost. In the same tournament, Berdych surprised the audience defeating Roger Federer, who was ranked third in the world, in the quarterfinals.
Winning the 2005 Paris Master is considered Berdych’s greatest victory as he was an unseeded player at the time. In the tournament’s final, he defeated Croatian Ivan Ljubičić.
