Those living in Cairo were thankful not to be residing in Alexandria on Sunday. The charming city, where the sky meets the sea, turned into a nightmare with floods from heavy rainfall throughout the day.
Tunnels were filled with water, streets were turned into small lakes and cars were totally damaged with water due to poor infrastructure. Pictures of houses drowning in dirty water while their owners mourn in agony were widely spread on social media. Policemen were pictured observing the catastrophic scenes and doing nothing while the city drowns in its water.
School and university students faced the danger when the water flooded into the buildings of the University of Alexandria and several schools causing difficulty in movement.
Amidst the catastrophe the city is facing, a video of a man offering to physically carry people from one side of the street to the other for EGP 1 was widely circulated in social media. Some found his initiative funny, while others described it as ironic referring to the latest statements from the governor of Alexandria on modernising the city.
