Bomb dismantled in Alexandria

This is the latest of several bombs discovered lately across Egypt

Explosive experts have dismantled a bomb beside the Borg Al-Arab post office in Alexandria Sunday.

Insurgent activities witnessed an increase over the past 18 months, with many of the attacks and explosives planted claimed by militants groups operating in Egypt. These have most notably been by “State of Sinai”, based in North Sinai, or Ajnad Masr, and have been targeting mainly security facilities and personnel across Egypt.

According to the ‘State of Sinai’ claim on Sunday, a bomb went off targeting a military vehicle in North Sinai.

The military spokesman could not be reached for confirmation.

Cairo Governor Galal Saeed announced earlier in January that an EGP 100,000 reward will be given to those who defuse explosive devices. Howevcer, many cases of policemen dying during bomb dismantlement have been reported over the past year.

In the last week, Egypt has witnessed rising insurgency in several governorates, with bombs exploding predominantly in North Sinai, but also in Qaliubeya, Suez, Alexandria, Fayoum, Kafr El-Sheikh, and Cairo.

On Thursday, a large scale attack targeting security facilities in Al-Salam suburb in North Sinai occurred. There are several security facilities in the area, including Battalion 101, a security complex of the North Sinai Security Directorate, Homeland Security Apparatus, Military Intelligence headquarters and a hotel that belongs to the army.

‘State of Sinai’ claimed the attack the same day noting that ‘hundreds’ were killed; however no official source confirmed it.
