Clashes between protesters and security forces in Matariya, Cairo renewed Monday night, with reports of two young men injured, of which one would be in critical condition.

Anti-government protesters in the working class neighbourhood occupied Matariya Square and Al-Horreya Street, where riot police confronting them, according to a Facebook page of the protesters.

At least 12 protesters were killed in Matariya on Sunday during protests that commemorated the fourth anniversary of the 25 January Revolution. The neighbourhood has become a flashpoint of anti-government protests since the beginning of the revolution in 2011.

Reports from social media activists and the Facebook page of the protesters claimed that two protesters, Mohamed Shaddad and Abanob Atef, were killed by security forces’ bullets, which was later corrected into injured. Similar accounts said that the protesters have been calling to stage a sit-in in the area.

Qatari-based news channel Al Jazeera reported that security forces fired live ammunition at the protesters.

The authorities have so far not released a statement on Monday’s clashes.

The pro-Muslim Brotherhood group Ultras Nahdawy among others called Monday for protests in Matariya Square with other non-Islamist protesters participating.
