Over 4,000 Cairo University students living in university dorms have undergone drug tests according to a statement released on the Cairo University website on Saturday.

University officials noted in the statement that 13,000 students would undergo tests, no objections to the tests having so far taken place. University President Gaber Nassar said in the University’s statement that tests are “in the interests of the students”, and results would be received the same day the test is taken.

According to the statement, as of 15 October, 1,957 men and 2,397 women have been tested.

The move comes during a turbulent time for universities across Egypt, as student-led protests have drawn increased attention from security forces. The last school year saw 16 students killed in clashes with security forces and hundreds arrested.

According to Democracy Index, 163 students have been arrested this school year, which started last Saturday. Increased security measures, including metal detectors and private security firms, led students to organise protests last week which saw a firm response by security forces.

Students Against the Coup, which has played a large role in organising student protests on campuses nationwide, has called again for protests during the second week of classes.
