Darb 1718 has begun hosting a photojournalism workshop, in collaboration with AlQomrah Photography School, with Mosa’ab El-Shamy.

El-Shamy is a well-known Cairo-based photojournalist whose work during the Egyptian revolution and the Gaza war gained him worldwide exposure, with his images being featured in TIME Magazine, Harper’s Magazine, The Economist, Foreign Policy Magazine and Aljazeera English. He has also worked with Amnesty International on a photo campaign and freelances for EPA, AFP and Andalou. El-Shamy’s photojournalism career includes experiences in the Middle-East and Africa, including Sudan, Nigeria, Yemen, Ethiopia and Egypt.

Part of AlQomrah’s photography school, the workshop is geared toward advanced photographers who want to develop their skills. “We are going to focus on what an advanced photographer needs to learn in terms of skills, safety precautions and most importantly ethics, to become a successful photojournalist,” said Rehab El-Dalil, who cofounded AlQomrah with Giacomo Crescenzi.

The workshop consists of five sessions, each lasting one hour and a half, with four focused on theory and one on practical application. “We don’t yet know what the practical session will be because it depends on the participants and El-Shamy. We need to know what the participants will be comfortable with, and we don’t want to compromise their safety when sending them into the field,” said El-Dalil.

The workshop’s theoretical sessions have assignments that give them a practical dimension. “The sessions ask a lot of the photographers on both the theoretical and practical levels,” said El-Dalil.

Sessions start on 26 March and continue on 27, 28, 29 and 31 March, from 6 to 8pm. The deadline for registration was 23 March; however, El-Dalil said late registration can be done by phone. The workshop fee is EGP 1,200 and requirements for acceptance in the workshop include a DSLR camera, basic photography knowledge and a portfolio.
