The Council of the European Union has renewed a decision to freeze the assets of former President Hosni Mubarak and 18 others for another year.

A Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman said that the decision came “in the context of intensified efforts by the ministry… and the efforts of the Egyptian embassy in Brussels,” in a Friday statement. The spokesman pointed out there was some “pressure not to extend the decision”.

The freeze, which was originally imposed on 21 March 2011, targets the assets of the former president, his wife, Suzzanne, his two sons, Alaa and Gamal and their wives. The freeze also extends to a number of former ministers as well as steel tycoon Ahmed Ezz. All 19 people named in the 2011 Council Regulation are “subject to judicial proceedings by the Egyptian authorities in respect of the misappropriation of State Funds on the basis of the United Nations Convention against corruption.”

The decision has been amended annually in order to maintain the freeze for an additional year.
