Government studies benefits of UNDP aid programme

Head of foreign trade ministry’s trade agreement division says partnering with United Nations Development Programme will boost trade movement between Egypt and other Arab countries

Egypt is studying methods of implementing the United Nations Development Programme’s (UNDP) Aid for Trade initiative for Arab states, especially with regard to developing the country’s trade and transport corridors, according to a statement from Ministry of Industry and Foreign Trade.

Saeed Abdullah, who heads the ministry’s trade agreements division, met with UNDP’s officials Saturday to set a long-term plan detailing how Egypt can benefit from the aid programme.

Abdullah said the initiative, which plays a role in boosting the trade movement between Arab countries, aims to achieve economic growth, increase employment and improve product competitiveness in the Arab region.

An agreement is currently being prepared between UNDP and Ministry of Communication and Information Technology to develop crafts in Upper Egypt and Sinai.

In June, Egypt’s government signed action plans with the United Nations Children’s Fund, the United Nations Development Programme, and the United Nations Populations Fund to support the country in implementing its 2013-2017 development agenda.
