Relocating the Nubians

The presidency is considering a bill to relocate Nubians in Upper Egypt

The presidency’s legal advisory board is currently considering a bill to relocate Nubians living on the banks of Nasser Lake, reported state-run Al-Ahram. The bill was proposed by a group of Nubian lawyers last week.

Another bill establishing an authority to reconstruct and develop the Nubia region is also being discussed by the presidency.

According to Al-Ahram the presidency plans to call for a community dialogue between the different Nubian factions, the people of Aswan and different political forces. The initial legal review is expected to be finished within two weeks.

“The legal advisory body that I mandated will soon finish considering the bill of relocating the people of ancient Nubia which aims to meet the aspirations of our people in Nubia and remove the injustices that they have suffered for years,” Morsi posted on his Twitter account on Tuesday.

The final drafting of the law will take place after considering different opinions to be presented by the presidency to the Shura Council for discussion.

Mounir Bashir, one of the Nubian lawyers, expressed worry over the draft laws. “As a result of the disagreement between political opposition forces and [President Mohamed] Morsi, the two bills could be rejected” He said.

“The issue of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam could also cause complications in implementing the bill.” He added
