CAIRO: Thousands of angry Egyptians blocked a highway north of Cairo Wednesday, burning tires and debris, after a speeding car struck a cyclist.

The cyclist, Bakri Gomaa, was moderately injured in the incident.

Some 5,000 people from the village of Sindarhum, on the outskirts of Cairo swarmed on to highway in protest against motorists who routinely ignore traffic rules, police said.

Protesters and burning tires obstructed traffic on the main highway leading to Alexandria. Police peacefully dispersed demonstrators.

Accidents are common along the route and have sparked protests before, but Wednesday s demonstration was larger than most.

In 2000, some 3,000 protesters blocked a highway near Cairo after a speeding truck killed a 16-year-old girl. AP
